Ellipsis Monday Photo Shoot: Weather

Survivors

The theme for this week's Photo Shoot over at Ellipsis is simply...Weather.  She has made this one kind of hard and limited us to no archives.  I would love to get out and photograph the current weather, but I have come down with the flu and am actually out of work at the moment because exposure to the sub-freezing temperatures has been rough on my poor throat.  I am also still lamenting over the loss of my ultra-wide angle lens as well.  However, it was on that fateful trip to Hanging Rock last weekend where I captured this image.  I figure that it is not too old and counts as a current photograph.  It showcases a NC winter quite well with the dormant foliage on the distant mountain, the windswept landscape, and the deep blue Carolina sky.  I had the added bonus of the clouds being just about perfect...both providing diffused lighting on my subject matter and adding drama to the sky.

Carly has also given us extra credit for this week's assignment.  For this one she allows archived photos that show our favorite weather condition.  I have a lot of favorite conditions depending on the mood that I am in at the time.  As it turns out, I love the sky as featured above with the billowy clouds and deep blue.  However, there are other times when less than favorable conditions make for the best photographs.

In the Wake

Here you see an example of mostly cloudy skies, with drab colors.  However, it is that hint of color that makes the image pop, and which gives it a very strong mood.  I can't remember the exact quote, but a photographer once said that when the weather turns bad, the photographer should be reaching for their camera.  I've found that true more times than not.

    Hi Greg :)

Oh my, feel better soon hon, what a way to begin 2010! Fantastic photo, I am so glad you decided to go ahead and submit it this week, because it is just about perfect! It reminds me of the "Lone Cypress" on the 17 mile drive in Monterey/Pacific Grove. It is used as the official logo for Pebble Beach. I am sure you have seen it, anyway, gorgeous photo you have here. I love the archived one as well. Oh how I wish I could get out into some snow, I would like to have the chance to flex my photographer wings in those conditions. Well done. Feel better!

The rhythms held in the water echoing the memory of the mountains and the sky are indeed a 'Wake' in the best Irish tradition.

I love that second shot, it's simply awesome! Take care of yourself and keep yourself warm. It's sunny here at 80degrees F, sending some sunshine over to you.

I'm sorry you've had the flu, Greg! I hope you feel better soon. Those are some wonderful pictures. They both set a mood and tone, but especially the second one, to my way of thinking. Very nice.
